OUR STORY

A letter from Michael Hughes,
the CEO of PlushBeds

Michael Hughes, PlushBeds CEO

On behalf of our entire team, thank you for your interest in learning more about the history of PlushBeds.

This journey started for me when my father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at just 40 years old. I watched this horrible disease rob him of everything he had, including his life, by age 64. While there is no definitive evidence as to what causes Parkinson’s Disease, epidemiologic studies suggest that exposure to certain chemicals in our environment are associated with an increased risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.

When our daughter was born, my wife and I did a lot of research and eliminated as many chemicals in our home as possible. That search included looking for healthy, toxin-free mattresses for our family. We quickly learned how hard it was to find healthy, toxin-free mattresses! Most of the mattresses on the market were made with mystery urethane foams and other unhealthy materials covered in potentially harmful fire barriers. Sales people were of little help as they had no idea what was in each mattress.

One disturbing study discovered in our research was the level of flame retardants used in furniture, including mattresses, found in the breast milk samples of women across the United States.

A report by the Environmental Working Group found that the average level of the bromine-based fire retardant in American women’s breast milk was 75 times higher than the average found in recent European studies. These flame retardants may save human lives from fires, but research has shown that these chemicals can damage memory, learning, and hearing in laboratory mice.

We founded PlushBeds to provide our family and others with healthier sleep options. We did the research and built relationships with the healthiest and the best quality material suppliers, so that our family and others like ours could enjoy a healthy & worry-free sleep environment.

More than a decade later, we continue to exceed the highest industry standards, and provide the most luxurious natural sleeping experience designed specifically for families who don’t believe they need to sacrifice their health for a comfortable night’s sleep. Our high standards and our commitment to providing a superior customer experience has driven us to become one of America’s largest manufacturers of natural & organic organic latex mattresses that are as affordable as they are indulgent.

Uncompromising Standards

PlushBeds has remained a family-owned company with no outside investors since we founded it in 2008.

It has remained a founding principle of mine that we run a company not beholden to the financial whims of outside decisionmakers.

Michael Hughes family

  • We have no revenue goals or product launch deadlines.
  • No finance department worrying about budget meetings.
  • No one’s cutting corners or making compromises to increase shareholder profits.

Our growth has never been our goal; our growth is the result of being passionate about providing the absolute best mattress we can build. This also means we get to run the kind of company our employees want to work for, and our customers want to support.

Transparency

We go through the rigorous expense, training and inspections annually to qualify as one of only a few dually certified organic factories in the United States, and we have additional layers of quality checks, safety systems and certifications in place to maintain the absolute highest standards. We ensure our workers are treated fairly, with safe working conditions, humane hours, and a livable wage.

The result is not only an amazing place to work, but the production of amazing products - the most comfortable, healthy mattresses you've ever slept on, made in California by proud artisans who are masters of their craft.

Honesty

When it comes to the health of your family, I believe there is no such thing as too much honesty. If you ask us a question, we'll tell you the answer. It may not be what you want to hear, but it will be the answer you need.

Our goal is to provide free educational resources to everyone that needs help with making a decision about buying a mattress. A PlushBeds mattress might not be for everyone. That's okay.

We still want to be the resource to help you decide one way or another, because it's important to learn the truth when shopping for a mattress, and to make an informed decision about how your family sleeps.

Advocacy

Lastly, we pride ourselves on our active advocacy. Esse quam videri means "to be, rather than to seem to be." We don't scour the internet for environmentally friendly badges to buy and post on our website as several companies do. We donate real money to real organizations making a difference, and we have since the beginning.

Although we don't publicly speak of our efforts often, you can learn more about our dedication to empowering the voice of those seeking to make our world a better place on our Advocacy page.

In the end, it’s not our advocacy, or even our materials that define us. It’s our drive to make your bedroom the safest, most comfortable place to recuperate from the daily challenges life provides.

My family and I would like to invite you to join us in our mission to make the world a more comfortable, healthier place, one night at a time.

Thank you,

Michael Hughes
